1. You don't have to provide a name. If you want to, you can do that with the 
-o option.

2. What do you mean, when you say "the program hangs"? Do you get error 
messages? Can you compile anything else (like "hello world")?

3. Did you compile Allegro itself? If you did, you should have a compiled 
ex1.exe.
