I recommend Editplus (http://www.editplus.com). 
It is very configurable and supports syntax highlighting (for any
language),
shell execution with output capture (for compiling or whatever), macros, 
auto completion (finish some text you start) etc...
it's shareware for $20. Probably the best buy I've made in the shareware
world.
