Thanks for all the responses.

I'm very interested in learning C and C++ and eventually want to be able to
program with a view to gnu, so djgpp seems appropriate.

On the topic of chess, are you folks familiar with the apparent recent
success of a chess program written in PowerBasic?

If interested, I'll cross-post some material.
