If you use one of the functions listed in the FAQ as being under the
BSD copyright, you need to put the blurb in your docs or in the
program itself. Note that as of v2.02, `malloc' and `qsort' are no
longer the BSD versions, but the rest of functions still are.
I think the FAQ says this explicitly in section 19.1.

What kind of way around it, besides the illegal one, did you have in
mind? How else can you get around of giving a credit?
I also fail to understand why would someone object to putting a
one-sentence blurb in some README file that goes with the program.
What and how can this possibly hurt?
