I think we need first to establish that the problem is with Caldera.
It might be that the problem is with one of these:

   - your setup of DJGPP and/or RHIDE;
   - some bug in RHIDE;
   - some bug in the DJGPP library;

I suggest to contact the authors of RHIDE and SETEDIT and work with
them to see whether one of the above could be the case, e.g. by
writing a small test program that redirects compiler's errors to a
file, like RHIDE does, and running it under a debugger to see why does
the redirection fail.
