This sounds very cool, and I hate to be a spoilsport, but I'm afraid
you may have been duplicating some work. There is already a lib called 
ALLEGTTF, by Doug Eleveld, that lets you use FreeType alongside Allegro: 
you can find this on http://huizen.dds.nl/~deleveld/allegttf.htm.

Obviously I don't know the details of your code, but I would imagine
there is quite a bit of overlap.
