    On many machines these days, DirectX programs run faster than their DOS
equivalents.  Most DOS programs only use VESA compatability which isn't
enourmously fast (even v2).  On many video cards, they supply directx drivers
that can do blits/fills/polygons faster than you can ever hope to do in DOS
(unless they tell you how to take advantage of the hardware acceleration).
