Hmmm.  Empty function bodies should _not_ cause GCC to freeze up. 
Basically nothing should cause GCC to lock up.  Give us a url
(preferred) or the source that causes it and you'll have a lot of people
look at it and tell you what's wrong.  BTW, make sure you compile with
-Wall -W flags and look at all the warnings...
