This is not only problem I got in plain DOS without LFN support. There are
more... . As the result I'm afraid that trying to make it fully compatible
with plain MS-DOS we'll make it too incompatible with other systems. 

So currently best I can suggest currently is to try it under Win9X with
LFN=Y.
