Are you telling that *any* symlink invoked by *any* Makefile causes Make 
to crash?  I find this hard to believe, since many Makefiles have the 
SHELL=/bin/sh line, and on my system sh.exe is a symlink.

So please investigate the symlink problem a bit more.  If you can present 
a test case with a simple Makefile (which doesn't require the entire Tar 
distribution ;-), please post it.
