You can use vpath with *.o, but that won't cause GCC to *put* *.o
files in that directory. vpath only tells Make where to look for
*existing* files that are needed to build a target.

Yes. That's the only manual which comes with Make.
To quickly find the description of vpath, type "info make", then press
`i' (index search), type "vpath [Enter]" and then press `,' (comma)
until you land in the section that describes vpath. The `i' command
is a powerful means to use a manual like a reference.
