You can put CWSDPMI anywhere on your PATH, not necessarily on the CD.  
That will allow DJGPP programs to load it automatically.

It is usually a good idea to put DJGPP's bin directory first on the 
PATH.  Not sure whether this has anything to do with your problem 
(probably not), but it sometimes solves some very weird cases.
