Thanks to Hans-Bernhard Broeker for clarifying the cast mechanism for me. Now I realize what I want to do is declare a pointer named "screen" and set its address to zero (so I can recognize this bogus value in a test). I believe this is referred to as a "null" pointer, even though there really is a value of zero.
