Each of the following is worth one penny:

(1) Have you read the Readme.1st and the FAQ?
(2) The "Environment variable" probably refers to the fact that DJGPP is
looking for the .env file and can't find it.  Have you set up your
autoexec.bat path properly?

Hence, the above is my two cents.
