I tend to disagree.
I think you need to completely change the approach of the problem. 
A function parser could do the trick here, I think (though it's not so
easy to program.) Just let the parser transform user functions into some
internal representation and use that to do your calulations. Fractint does
it for creating userdefined fractals, IFS'es and L-systems, and that was
written in C.
