Yes, of course. The config functions are used to specify initial 
values: you can't alter these while the sound is active, because it 
would be a nonsense to select a different driver or change an IRQ 
setting while the sound was actually playing!

Not at all. The set_volume() function has existed ever since 
Allegro version 2.1, which was released more than two years ago!
