I haven't thought much about the possible causes of this, but you might
try using the latest patched libc from my site and rebuilding again. 
One of the patches introduced a bug which is now fixed.  I'm not sure
offhand if it is related, but it might be worth a try.

As a workaround, you can probably use `/dev/nul' (one 'l').
