I tracked the problem down to the fmul function in allegro.
If I replace the calls to apply_matrix with a function that does the same
but instead of fmul uses ((a>>8)*(b>>8)) then the assembler doesn't throw
the errors.
I hope this helps someone tell me what I've done wrong.
