I fail to understand why file name completion is considered less
user-friendly than directory listing navigation.

Did you ever try to press TAB after typing a few first characters of
the file/directory name at Less's prompt?  In my experience, using
this feature, you can always get into the right directory faster than
by scrolling a display with arrow keys, with a possible exception of
very small directories.

And if you want a directory display while in Less, you can always say
"!ls -lg RET", and see it.
