IIRC I had to make two changes to get calc to build without a hitch. 

1) Change all references from ".emacs" to "_emacs" 
2) Change the default names of info files from *info-[1-21] to *.[1-21]. 
I had to do this so that makeinfo would not sequentially overwrite the 
earlier file due to identical file name modulo (8.3).

With these two changes calc build smoothly, or atleast appeared to. 
Ofcourse I haven't got to a stage where I can run gnuplot yet. That will 
have to wait till Eli waves his magic wand I suspect :)
