It would help if you tell what exactly prevents you from running gnuplot 
the way you would like to.

I works for me with Calc 2.02e.

IIRC, Calc modifies your _emacs init file so that `M-#' works.  If you 
didn't do that part of installation, or if you edited _emacs to remove or 
otherwise disable that portion thereof, then you could have these 
problems.
