I apologize for not making my point more clear -- even if I manually typed
the filenames in several files would fail to patch -- re-read my original
post.  This would, of course, cause a cascade of problems resulting in the
configure script finally bombing with the error:

Configuring libiberty...
*** ../configure: unable to link "alloca-conf.h" to "./alloca-norm.h".
Configure in //h/djgpp/gnu/binutl-2.81/libiberty failed, exiting.

I have been unable to resolve this issue -- and I am uncertain as to whether
or not I am up to the challenge (as a newbie to DJGPP) of manually patching
the GNU sources to handle msdos correctly.  You apparently have gotten them
to compile -- can you tell me how you did it exactly?  what packages you
have installed?
