Reading the FAT requires direct disk reads, so the `biosdisk' function 
would be a start.  Note that direct access to the disk on Windows 9X 
requires that you lock the volume first (`biosdisk' doesn't do that), but 
I think it's only needed to write the disk, not to read it.
