There (of course) is code in Allegro's grabber to do exactly that.  I
used a great lot of that code in the AllegTTF library.  There are
function to do exactly this along with fast antialiased text drawing and
loading of TTF, bitmap(PCX,BMP...), GRX, and BIOS style fonts.
