I can't judge this, since I didn't see the offending code.  If it's 
compact enough, maybe it's a good idea to post it, so we could discuss 
the various possibilities to fix it.

Not necessarily.  If GCC finds the correct directory, it could change 
DJDIR in the environment before invoking the other programs.
