I would suspect a compiler bug manifesting as a NULL dereference. Perhaps the
compile uses a lot of mem and something isn't checking malloc's return value,
and that happened to be the case for the malloc call that failed...
BTW is that -fderef-pop arg correct? (new 2.8.x op feature?) I've heard
of -fdefer-pop but not -fderef-pop.
