Exactly. The most used color for index 0 is black, but you'd better
use another one. If you use bright magenta you will have some
similarities with true color images (for which allegro uses that color
as transparent).

Have a look at the Allegro homepage (www.talula.demon.co.uk/allegro IIRC),
there are a lot of links to utilities to edit sprites and palettes.
