I would suggest testing all the places where you call `malloc', in case 
it returns NULL and your code then dereferences a null pointer.

No, CWSDPMI could be somewhere on your PATH.  It doesn't need to be in 
the same directory.

But if your program at all runs, your problem is NOT with CWSDPMI.  If it 
were, you would see a message like "No DPMI.", not crashes.
