Off-topic here, but...

GNU is a project which aims to produce "quality free software." Much DJGPP
software is ports of their work. GNU stands for "GNU's Not Unix!", a
recursive acronym which I believe was in protest to the licensing policies
of AT&T's Unix. You can find out more about it, including the GNU Manifesto
which explains their stances on free software, at (I think) www.gnu.org.
