I came to about the same conclusions you do with one exception -- MINGW32. It doesn't seem to have any documentation about programming in windows. However, I took a peek at the "specs" file and discovered that the option "-mwindows" needs to be added to the command line, i.e. gcc -mwindows -o test.exe test.c "gcc -v" will show where the spec file is located. I compiled the V++ package with it and it works very well.
