It is sometimes hard to find the relevant documentation, since emacs is so big.
 You probably know that you can get to info from emacs by hitting "C-h i". 
From there you can go to the emacs node.  On the page for emacs there is a
subsection titled, "Compiling and Testing Programs".  There are some relevant
nodes there.

No, it's integrated in a nice way, especially if you use make.
