I'd guess that this has nothing to do with RHIDE.  NC probably calls
COMMAND.COM to run external programs (most DOS compilers do that in
their `system' library function, although DJGPP doesn't).  One of the
first things COMMAND.COM does is to close all handles above the 5
predefined ones, which explains what you see.
