If you have access to an academic library, you can do what I did and pick their
best books.  I found Kernighan & Ritchie's _The C Programming Language_ to be
essential.  But is is not simple.  Read other books first if you need to.

I think that you may be shooting yourself in the foot if you limit yourself to
simple books.  Many of the books I've seen are not worth reading because in
trying to be simple they end up confusing.  Learning C isn't really "simple".
