With crypt(), another legal aspect is that I believe an algorithm in
the function is patented.

Since the entire source code for PGP, which many arguably find is the
best there is in encryption, appears to be under no patent 
restrictions, and is available on the Internet (including the strong 
encryption option; look for version 2.6.3i), I am wondering why 
people seem rather averse to using it or even considering it.
