Hans, 
you might want to look at the tool by c't, the names escape me.
But search for ctpci, and in it's proximity you'll find something.
ftp://ftp.uni-paderborn.de mirrors the ct BBS, so check that
out. Or, have a look at
http://www.heise.de
and maybe post your results for the non-german speaking
people out here. 
IIRC, it was called cpuid, and one should get the source
somewhere.
