It depends on the properties of your DOS box, it has nothing to do with 
DJGPP itself.

Open the DOS box property sheets, click on the "Misc" tab, then uncheck 
the "Background: always suspend" property, and click "Apply" (or is it 
"OK"?).  Start a new DOS box, and you should see that background programs 
don't stop in their tracks.
