I think that U may be misleading.  Editing autoexec.bat can be doing it right.

If I remember correctly, there is a readme.1st file that is critical to
getting started on the right track.  Find and read that. 

There is also a very helpful FAQ by Eli Zaretskii.  I like to use the Windows
help version because it is very easy to search.  You can get the Windows help
version of the FAQ at http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/doc/
