Why didn't you run `ranlib' on Linux as well?  Or just add `s' to the 
`ar' flags (Linux uses GNU Binutils, so its `ar' should support it).

I don't know, but you might consider asking on gnu.utils.bug news group, 
or running `ar' on a smaller library and watch memory usage relative to 
library size.
