When I both a)bumped up the internal table size to 1024 and b) dropped
config.sys altogether ("raw" extended memory) things finally began to go
very well in "plain" DOS mode. I think that you have got me over that hill.
Now I have to get accustomed to the gnu way of interfacing C/C++ and assembly
language and I will be where I want to be. It will be a question of the
speed of the gnu executables--remind me once more what the "fastest possible
code" switch looks like on the line
           gxx example.cc -o example.exe
Thanks again and Merry Christmas to all.
