I'd guess that your system is not set for optimal DJGPP performance.  Did 
you see the system-configuration advice in section 3.9 of the DJGPP FAQ 
list (v2/faq210b.zip from the same place you get DJGPP)?

If the FAQ advice doesn't help, post your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.
