Allegro is a part of the SimTel DJGPP distribution. Assuming that you
obtained DJGPP from a SimTel mirror, simply go to the same place and get
v2tk/alleg22.zip, which is the latest released version. The zipfile is
approximately 1 megabyte, expands to 2.4 megabytes, and in its compiled
form with all objects, libraries, and executables, Allegro takes about
10 megabytes. You can, of course, delete everything except the header
and library when you are done building it.

Allegro 2.2 requires GNU Make (v2gnu/mak375b.zip), and the C++
components of DJGPP (v2gnu/gpp2721b.zip and v2gnu/lgp271b.zip) for a
clean build, but there is a workaround if you don't want to install C++
(see the Allegro readmes).

The latest version of Allegro, with truecolor support, C++-free
building, and many thousands of other improvements, is in development
and may be downloaded for testing purposes if you are curious about it.
I'm sure you can find Shawn Hargreaves' web site somewhere on this
mailing list. :-)
