Different editors have different ways of handling tabs vs. spaces. I
don't know anything about MultiEdit, but here are some suggestions for
getting it to use real tabs:
- Look in its options to see if there is a setting, "Use Real Tabs", or
anything similar.
- Try inserting a tab with Ctrl-I. If that doesn't work, try Alt-0009
(using the numeric keypad).
- Try loading a file that already has literal tabs instead of spaces.
This convinces some editors (like DOS Edit) to use real tabs.
- If you really get desperate, load the file into a hex-editor and
manually change spaces to tabs. (search for " "; replace with
ascii 009.)
If you cannot in any way convince your editor to use literal tabs, then
you'll have to find another one. If you know who wrote the thing, send
them email and complain loudly. :-)
Some other convenient editors that I know work: DOS 6.22 Edit (but not
DOS 7.0), Windows Notepad (although you may have to convince it to save
in the proper format).
The two major DJGPP editors/IDEs, RHIDE and Emacs, both use literal tabs
if set properly. I think that they are worth learning if you are
willing to take the time.
