If you like 'electronic books', the free PDF-docs from Intel :

  www.intel.com/design/pentium/manuals

have a lot info about x86 architecture and programming.

The 'embedded-PC' or 'PC-in-a-chip' microcontroller (Intel 386EX, AMD
Elan and NSC 486SXL) manuals can also be helpful -- these chips have
a lot of a PC motherboard inside...

If you have a direct net connection at your local library or at
school, better to use it... These docs are about 2 - 5 Megabytes
each... And you can look if they have the docs available in a free
CDROM, so you can save hd-space...
