Did you compare the compilation speed (lines/second) that you get from 
GCC with the table in section 7.1 of the FAQ?  If that is the speed that 
you get, then your configuration is correct.

GCC is known to be slower than other compilers, although not by a large 
factor usually.  For example, Borland's compilers usually compile twice 
as fast as GCC.
