Why don't you want to make the short name a faithful truncation of the
long one?  I agree that those numeric tails are bad idea, but the
short alias should somehow remind of the long one, or it will be a
bitch for the users to find them.

So I'd advise making the alias be a truncated long name, and if that
clashes with an existing file, replace part of the name with some
computed stuff, numeric or not.
