What exactly happens?  Where did the .dat file come from, and what
were you doing to it that made the grabber crash?

Can you start the grabber, create your own datafile, and do the same
thing to that without it crashing?

It sounds to me as if you're trying to use the grabber and dat
programs on some .dat file which is not an Allegro datafile.  The
dat2s utility simply converts a binary file to an assembler source
file in a special way, and presumably isn't checking the file format.
