I didn't receive your original message, so I just hope Carolyn reposted it completely.

Is it possible that you didn't set the environment in the djgpp.env file?

BTW you don't have to put an additional line "set path..." in your autoexec.bat. Just add C:\djgpp\bin to your "path" line:
set path=c:\dos;C:\djgpp (for example, I hope you have a path declared already...)
