This subject has been beaten to death here.  I'd rather not start
another thread about it.  Please use the DJGPP mail-archives
(http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/mail-archives/) to read past
correspondence on this.  Searching for ELF would be a good start.

Short answer: DJGPP uses COFF because ELF was not around when DJGPP
was started.  Switching to ELF is possible, but a lot of work needs to
be done to make a switch to another object format, and the advantages
are not that overwhelming.  Until now, nobody has volunteered to make
this happen, so it didn't.
