Both of these statements were perfectly legal, and, more importantly,
were not the problem. Please don't correct things that don't need

As for the original poster's problem here, there doesn't seem to be
anything wrong with the code pasted in. Likely the problem is with a
stray quote in the file somewhere (such as the beginning or end) that
the poster didn't notice.
