I agree with your last statement. I can't get -O3 to work with the IRIX
compiler (it says you have to do certain linker thingies which I don't
know how to do). However, I didn't just ``slam -O2 on the IDO compiler.''

Anyway, for reference, the GCC switches I used were -O2 -Wall -mcpu=r4000
-mips2 and for the IDO CC I used -O2 -mips2 (-O3 wouldn't work because of
the ucode thingie).
